Do seasoning packets go bad?

Long story short, while members of my family bought us useful housewarming gifts, ie a sofa, dishes, etc... my mother in law decided it would be thoughtful to clear out her pantry & give us seasoning packets, all of which have expired & most of which expired prior to 1996- I kid you not. I personally do not use seasoning packets because they're loaded with salt, but my husband thinks this "gift" was extremely thoughtful & refuses to throw them out... he insists they're still good. Do seasoning packets go bad after a certain amount of time?
