My cat's hair is extremely thinning, should I be worried?

I have an 11 year old long-haired female Maine coon cat. Yesterday, I noticed her tail wasn't like it normally is- bushy and full of fur. Also, a small area around her lower back is just extremely thin and hair is more than usual falling out. Should I take her to a vet...? Or are these just signs that she is getting old?
